What Are You Looking At?

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.”

Matthew 6:22

Chances are most people do not fully realize the importance of what they “take in”. We watch television, read books, and flip through magazines every day. Some of what we see and read sticks with us, while other parts we forget about. Sometimes it’s the positive stuff we forget and the negative we remember – even though we mean to do the opposite! God says our eyes can either be good or bad and we have a choice in the matter (Matthew 6:22-23).

Have you ever thought about why the eyes are so important? Isn’t it because they protect the heart? Ultimately, don’t we all want a pure heart – undefiled and clean? I think all Christians want this, but many don’t understand why it isn’t so. Yet watching CSI and reading Stephen King are their sources of entertainment. I know I have walked out of movies, refused to read books (one even for graduate school!), and turned off the t.v. countless times when there was nothing good to watch. I have to force myself not to read about lives of celebrities, pick up a copy of People, or shop at Victoria’s Secret. All of these things may seem harmless, but they’re not. The message they communicate is “you’re not enough” and “life is about what you can see”.

God’s voice is that still, small whisper that says “you’re beautiful”, “you’re more than enough”, “you have gifts that are not developed yet”, and “I have a wonderful plan for your future.” Those are the things He wants us to meditate on and talk about with our friends. If you have trouble in this area, ask God to help you discern the types of shows He wants you to watch and the books He wants you to read. I think you’ll be surprised!
